Tool: xTimeline

Requirements: Internet-connected computer

Cost: Free

This web-based application lets individuals or groups create public or private timelines and then embed them on a web page.

The example on the right is a timeline I started as a project planning timeline for this wiki.  As I was creating it, I noticed that each item in the timeline can have it's own tags and each item can have just a start date or a start and end date.  This is a fabulous easy tool to use to plot out any dates, events, projects, etc.

Example Uses

  • a professor creates a timeline of assignment due dates
  • a student create timelines to help organize all their assignment due dates along with their own input on scheduled study dates, planned draft assignment dates, etc.
  • a professor assigns students to create a historical timeline of the topic under study, or a timeline of a literature book being read, etc.
  • a group of students working on a team project could organize their project meeting times, deadlines, and to-do list.

Benefits

  • creating a timeline of assignments and scheduled study times helps students learn how to be more self-directed learners
  • assigning a group of students to create an historical timeline or book timeline will encourage collaboration and can help students put a topic into perspective
